The idea behind this project was to take a simple household object and transform it into a graphic icon. The project required that the resulting icon have as few defining details of the shape as possible while still clearly depicting the object. I chose to work with a small orange stapler.

I first took a scan of the stapler to capture its dimensions and imported it to Adobe Illustrator. I then worked over the scan to begin creating my icon. The following image depicts my design process, slowly removing and highlighting different pieces of the stapler to best capture its features in a simplistic way.

After the icon was completed, I chose one color other than black or white to create a final composition. I decided to use orange because of the original stapler’s color. I also created a second black and white composition highlighting my design process.
